How to automate comments and DMs on Facebook and Instagram

A step-by-step guide: what Meta allows, how to set up automatic comment replies and private messages, the 24-hour rule, and the mistakes that get pages into trouble.

Automating your replies is not about answering less. It is about answering everyone, immediately, and keeping your own time for the conversations that need a human.

This guide covers what Meta actually allows, how to set it up, and the mistakes that cost pages their reach.

First: what Meta allows, and what it does not

Everything below uses Meta's official API — the same one Meta provides for businesses. That matters, because it sets the rules:

  1. You can reply to any comment on your own post, at any time. There is no time limit on a public reply.
  2. You can send a private message to someone who commented. This is how a comment becomes a conversation.
  3. A conversation has a 24-hour window. Once someone messages your page, you may reply for 24 hours. After that Meta stops you until the person writes again. Nothing gets around this — a tool that claims otherwise is breaking Meta's rules with your page.
  4. On Instagram, private messages are text only. No buttons, no cards. That is Meta's limit, not a missing feature.
  5. A page never answers its own comments, and it should not: it looks like a page arguing with itself.

Anything that ignores these rules risks your page, not the tool's.

Step 1 — Connect your page

You log in with Facebook's own login and pick the pages and Instagram accounts you want. Your password never reaches us, and you can remove the access from your Facebook settings at any moment.

For Instagram, the account must be a professional account linked to a Facebook page. That is how Meta exposes Instagram comments and messages at all.

Step 2 — Let your posts come in

Your recent posts arrive by themselves, and so does every new one you publish. You do not paste links or copy post IDs.

Step 3 — Write the two answers

Every automation is really just two sentences you write once:

  • The public reply — what appears under the comment. Short, warm, and it should send people to their inbox: «Hello {name}, I have sent you the price in your messages 📩»
  • The private message — what actually sells. Your price list, your location, a photo, a button that calls you.

Write them once and every comment on that post is answered from then on.

Step 4 — Add keyword answers

Now make it smarter. One general answer covers everyone; keyword answers handle the questions you get most:

  • price, how much, cost → the answer about price
  • location, where → your address
  • delivery → your delivery terms and cities

A comment that matches nothing still gets your general reply, so nobody is ignored.

Step 5 — Set a welcome for first messages

When someone writes to your page for the first time, a welcome message answers immediately — your hours, your location, or a simple «we have received your message, we will answer shortly». It is sent once per person, not every time.

The settings that keep you safe

Automation goes wrong in public. Four settings stop that:

  • A cap per person. By default one person gets at most 3 answers under a post per day. Without a cap, a single person can generate a wall of replies.
  • Several wordings. Thirty identical replies under one post look like spam to a reader and to Meta. Write two or three versions and let them rotate.
  • A word filter that hides, never deletes. Comments with words you choose are hidden from everyone else. Deleting a customer's comment loses you the customer; hiding it keeps the record.
  • Pause for one person. When a conversation becomes real, pause the automatic replies for that person and answer yourself.

What you should not automate

  • The answer to a complaint. Speed is not the point there; being heard is.
  • A price you are not sure of. An automatic message that names a wrong price is worse than no message.
  • A promise about stock. Say what is true — «send us a message and we will confirm today» — rather than what you hope.

How to check it is working

Look at the reply log. It shows every comment, what was sent, and why nothing was sent when nothing was. It also shows which posts have unanswered comments — usually the posts you published before you set a reply.

Across the pages using Davar Tech, replies go out in about 8 seconds on average, and 620 private messages went out in the last thirty days.
